Great opportunity to meet others, share experiences and enjoy some time together in a welcoming setting.

- About Halifax Prostate Cancer Support & Social Group
Supporting you through your treatment and beyond
Our group was born out of the Prostate Education and Exercise Programme, (PEEP) which ran from 2022 to 2026. This 12 week programme ran very successfully for stage 3 & 4 prostate cancer patients in the Huddersfield and Halifax areas of West Yorkshire. However, it left participants wanting to continue their contact with fellow PEEP group members. So Geoff Eagle, the Macmillan Patient Representative on the programme, along with staff member Nicky Hill, founded this support and social group, which is open to all who are affected by prostate cancer in any way.
“This group grew from conversations with men who told us that what they valued most from the PEEP programme was not just the education and exercise, but the people. It’s been a privilege to help create a space where those connections can continue, offering understanding, reassurance, and companionship at whatever stage you find yourself” – Nicky Hill – Head of Active Together at Yorkshire Cancer Research.
A new programme based on PEEP and funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research has started in April 2026 and we look forward to participants on that course joining us at future gatherings at the Meandering Bear.

Meandering Bear
The Meandering Bear opens early at 3pm for our meetings on the 1st Tuesday of every month. It is a CAMRA pub so you can expect great beer and plenty of non-alcoholic beverage choice too.
Convenient Location
The bar is located close to the Piece Hall/Square Chapel & Westgate Arcade. 21/23 Union Street, Halifax, HX1 1PR
Refreshments
It offers a great range of cask & keg ales & lagers, cocktails and spirits. Food too with meat/cheese boards, toasted sandwiches and generally food to go with drinks in an informal setting. Many of their suppliers are from Calderdale so local produce is often used.
Safe & Peaceful Environment
Generally we have the bar to ourselves between 3 and 5pm. A friendly, welcoming environment facilitating small table discusions or wider group presentations.

“I must confess that before I went along with Ian to the meet up at the Meandering Bear I was quite apprehensive, wondering how I would fit in with a group of strangers whose only common ground was prostate cancer. I'm Ian's wife, not his carer but I went along to support him. After all, I thought, it's in a pub so worst case scenario I could always sit at the bar if it turned out to be too blokey and mopey. Well, it wasn't a bit like that - we received a warm welcome from Geoff on arrival and were introduced to everyone. The pub landlord opens an hour early for these meetings so we had the place to ourselves, and what a lovely hidden treasure the Meandering Bear is. Everyone was so friendly, many of us taking the opportunity to sample some of the variety of real ales, or enjoy a hot brew.”

"This is a cozy small bar where we meet on the first Tuesday of the month. The group is a friendly bunch all who have a similar condition but in various stages so there is plenty of experience to be had by anyone who needs advice or support. Partners are not only welcome but are encouraged to attend as they also can offer advice to others. Beside this there are times when talks are arranged by experts in this field to inform us of the latest developments and products to help in daily life. Apart from this as the Meandering Bear is a CAMRA Pub there is a superb selection of real ales as well as tea/coffee and other non alcoholic drinks. If you have any doubts about coming along don't you will be welcomed and made to feel at ease. So come and join us. Hope to see you soon."
